The Orissa Mathematical Society (OMS) came into being in the year 1972 on 11th September of the Hindu auspicious day of Lord Ganesh Chaturthi. The then Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University Prof. Ramanath Mohanty himself an acclaimed teacher and researcher in Mathematics declared the formation of OMS by breaking the coconut in the temple of lord Bisweswar inside the premises of Utkal University, in Vani Vihar. The then professor and head of the Department of Mathematics Prof. Sankar Prassad Mishra was the main spirit behind the formation of OMS.
